For years, rallying was seen as a man's sport. The cars were brutally fast, the roads unpredictable and the margin for error tiny. Then came Michèle Mouton. She did not enter motorsport trying to become the fastest woman. She just wanted to race. At the height of rallying's most dangerous era, Mouton became the first woman to win a round of the World Rally Championship and came within reach of winning the world title.Her story began in Grasse in southern France. Mouton initially worked as a co-driver, accompanying her friend Jean Taibi on the 1972 Tour de Corse. A year later, she moved into the driver's seat. Her father, Pierre, gave her an Alpine A110 with one condition: prove herself during the year or give it up. She proved herself quickly.

When male drivers wanted her car checked

Her career changed direction when Audi came calling.

Mouton's speed was so surprising that some male competitors questioned whether her Alpine was legal. According to the official website of Motor Sport, male drivers pressed the FIA to inspect the car for irregularities. There were none. Mouton also showed that her ability was not limited to rally stages. In 1975, she competed at the 24 Hours of Le Mans as part of an all-female crew and won the 2.0-litre class in a Moynet LM75.But rallying remained her main focus. She moved to a privately entered Porsche 911 in 1977 and earned a factory drive with Fiat France the following year. Her career changed direction when Audi came calling.

A car flipped things for her

Audi contacted Mouton in 1980, when the company's Quattro was entering competition. “I was called by Audi in 1980, June I think, but I can’t remember who it was,” Mouton recalled in an interview published by Motor Sport. “English was hard for me then, so I went to Ingolstadt with a teacher who could translate.”After a test in Finland with Quattro engineer Walter Treser, Mouton secured a works contract for 1981. The difference between the Audi and the Fiat she had driven was immediately obvious. Mouton later joked that the Fiat 131 felt “like a truck” compared with the Quattro.The Audi had more power and power steering, but it also required Mouton to understand a very different machine. “I didn’t like technical things so much, so I had to learn and adapt and understand how it worked,” she said.She would soon show exactly what she could do with it.

1981: The win that changed women's place in the WRC

Mouton began the 1981 World Rally Championship season with co-driver Fabrizia Pons. Audi knew an all-female crew had publicity value, but few expected Mouton to challenge the established stars immediately. The Quattro itself had reliability problems, while Audi was still building its rally operation.Mouton nevertheless finished eighth overall in the championship. Then came the Sanremo Rally. Mouton and Pons won outright, making Mouton the first woman to win a round of the World Rally Championship.It remains the defining achievement of her WRC career. The following season, she went even further.

Three wins and a world title within reach

The 1982 season began badly after a crash at Monte Carlo. But Mouton responded by winning in Portugal, Greece and Brazil. The Portugal victory came in difficult conditions, with spectators crowding sections of the route and dense fog making the stages even harder. By the penultimate round, the Côte d'Ivoire Rally, Mouton was fighting Walter Röhrl for the world championship. The rally was an exceptionally demanding event, covering around 750 miles of gravel.Then, just before the start, Mouton received devastating news. Her father had died of cancer. “My father died at 7 a.m., and the race started at 8:30 a.m.,” she recalled. “I wanted to go home but my mother said to drive.” Only Pons knew what had happened. Mouton started the rally. She built a lead of 1 hour and 20 minutes over Röhrl before a gearbox change cost her 1 hour and 15 minutes. More problems followed. She pushed to recover the lost time but eventually crashed out.The championship went to Röhrl. Mouton finished second overall in the 1982 World Rally Championship, still the best WRC championship result achieved by a woman. Her reaction was not about the title. “I lost the world championship, but I missed my father more,” she said.Her second-place finish in Rally GB also helped Audi secure the manufacturers' championship, the first such title for an all-wheel-drive car.

Then she went up Pikes Peak

Mouton's WRC opportunities were reduced after 1983. She finished fifth in the 1983 championship, while Audi teammate Hannu Mikkola won the title. Audi later signed Röhrl, leaving Mouton with only limited opportunities. But Audi of America gave her another challenge: the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in Colorado.The 12-mile climb was run over dirt and gravel, with hundreds of corners and steep drops. Mouton competed there in 1984, winning her class despite engine problems and the added weight of carrying co-driver Pons. In 1985, she returned alone. And won outright. Mouton completed the climb in 11 minutes 25.39 seconds, beating established American names including Bobby Unser. She also broke the overall course record, set by Al Unser, by 13 seconds.But the race was not without controversy. Mouton said officials had made things difficult after she exceeded a low speed limit during practice by a small amount. She was ordered to pay a fine, and officials wanted her to run to the car before the start, in the style of an old Le Mans start.Mouton publicly argued that the arrangement was dangerous because it could encourage a driver to enter the car and begin driving without properly securing the seatbelt. She was eventually required to start with the car out of gear. She won anyway. “They didn’t know how determined I am!” she later said.

When the cars became almost impossible to tame

Mouton drove several versions of Audi's Quattro, including the increasingly powerful Group B cars. Of them, she preferred the first short-wheelbase Quattro, particularly its twin-clutch PDK gearbox. But she also recognised how quickly the cars were becoming difficult to control.She said the later short-wheelbase car had about 530 bhp on asphalt and had become so fast that finding the limit left drivers with very little time to react. “Gravel always showed you the limit. You could feel it,” she explained.Group B would eventually become infamous for the dangers surrounding it. Lancia driver Attilio Bettega was killed on Corsica in 1985. In 1986, a Ford RS200 crashed into spectators during the Portugal Rally, killing people. Then came the accident that would end the era. During the 1986 Tour de Corse, Mouton was driving a Peugeot 205 T16. She had retired two stages before Henri Toivonen and co-driver Sergio Cresto were killed when their car crashed and caught fire. Mouton and Toivonen were friends.“I had retired two stages before the accident, so I was in the service park when we heard. It was terrible. Terrible,” she recalled. The deaths ultimately contributed to the end of Group B.

She left rallying but did not leave motorsport

Her career was also the subject of the Emmy-winning documentary “Queen of Speed” in 2021.

Mouton won the 1986 German Rally Championship and continued competing in rally raids with Peugeot until 1989. She then retired from competition and turned to raising her family. Her daughter was born in 1987. But motorsport remained part of her life. In 1988, Mouton helped establish the Race of Champions, initially created as a contest between WRC champions in identical cars. The event later became a meeting point for drivers from different motorsport disciplines.Mouton's work in motorsport also moved beyond competition. From 2010 until her retirement in 2022, she served as president of the FIA Women in Motorsport Commission, which promotes women's participation across motorsport. Her career was also the subject of the Emmy-winning documentary “Queen of Speed” in 2021.Mouton's career is often described through the fact that she was a woman competing in a male-dominated sport. That is an important part of the story, but it was never how she measured herself. She won when the cars were difficult to control, competed against drivers who had no reason to make space for her and came within one rally of becoming the first woman to win the World Rally Championship.No woman has finished higher than Mouton's second place in the WRC championship. By the end of her career, the question was no longer whether a woman could compete. It was whether anyone could keep up with Michèle Mouton.
